The International Institute is dedicated to providing generous financial support, with over $4 million in funding awarded annually for research abroad, international internships, and the study of less commonly taught languages, as well as conference travel and event funding.
The II administers several fellowships and grants to support new and returning MIRS students with tuition costs, including some awards for which all students are eligible upon application to the program.
Each MIRS student will be awarded a $1,000 international travel grant to be used during their program. This funding is intended to assist with the cost of international travel and can be used for travel related to conference attendance, research, or internships.
Eligible students are strongly encouraged to apply for Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) awards, which are offered by six II area studies centers. U.S. citizens and permanent residents may apply under a separate application from admission.

Financial Aid
Additionally, the University of Michigan participates in the U.S. Department of Education William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program, and federal loans are available to eligible U.S. citizens and permanent residents who submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). More information regarding financial aid for graduate students, including federal work study, on-campus employment, and private loans can be found at the Office of Financial Aid.
Students are further encouraged to apply for funding though other sources. These include funding administered by the Rackham Graduate School, CEW+, and graduate student assistantships.
