Non-degree Programs

Non-Candidate for Degree

The Center for Japanese Studies offers limited opportunity to take a limited number of graduate level courses on Japan as a non-degree student.  You must apply and be admitted to the Center as a Non-Candidate for Degree (NCFD) student.  NCFD is generally limited to one term only.  In special circumstances, NCFD status may be extended to a second term with Center approval.

If you are interested in taking graduate courses as a Non-Candidate for Degree student, please contact CJS at [email protected] to discuss your circumstances and to receive application instructions.  Please note: applicants who already have an undergraduate degree and are interested in enrolling in Japanese language courses at the University of Michigan as a non-degree student should apply to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions to be a LSA Non-Degree student, since all Japanese language courses are listed at the undergraduate level.

Non-Candidate for Degree students are not eligible for funding from the Center for Japanese Studies.

Visiting Graduate Student

Students who are currently enrolled in a graduate degree program at another institution of postsecondary education and would like to study and/or conduct research at the University of Michigan may apply to become a Visiting Graduate Student through the Center for Japanese Studies.  This status is intended for students who are able to study and/or conduct research independently using the resources at the University of Michigan with minimal supervision and guidance from Center faculty.  Students who wish to attend classes or require consultation with Center faculty at the level of an independent study course must enroll as a non-candidate for degree student (see section above).  Visiting Graduate Students must be working on a degree program or a research project related to Japan, and must secure a Center faculty member to be a faculty sponsor.

Visiting graduate students are provided with access to computing and library facilities as well as an ID card.  Office space will not be provided.  International students will be provided with visa assistance.  Visiting graduate students are not eligible for funding from the Center for Japanese Studies.

If you are interested in being a Visiting Graduate Student at the Center for Japanese Studies, please contact CJS at [email protected] and send a current curriculum vitae.
