Dear graduates,

Having participated in and observed dozens of ceremonies in my various academic and administrative roles, I deeply understand why commencement is so important. For every class, and for every student and their family, commencement is a beautiful moment, an important milestone, and a shining symbol of a hard-earned achievement. It is also an opportunity for our entire campus community to embrace our graduates one at a time, celebrate their accomplishments, shake their hands, wish them a heartfelt farewell and best wishes as they go forth in the world, and welcome them to the U-M alumni family.

This year need not be any different. Although the necessary actions taken to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 have disrupted our plans to celebrate together in a live format, they cannot dampen the spirit of our collective celebration to acknowledge your crowning achievements. The disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic also cannot dampen your resolve to utilize the knowledge and skills you have gained to make this world a better place.

I know that many of you have successfully navigated challenging situations in the past, and while the current one is certainly both historic and unique, I am confident that we will be a resilient community and that each of you will not only persevere, but learn from this experience. Indeed, I challenge you to remain optimistic, to embrace these extraordinary times as an opportunity for growth, to remain committed to altruism, and to find ways to boost your emotional strength as we face this global crisis together. We will get through this!

Today we celebrate you and your achievements! We look forward to living in a world touched by your influence! Congratulations graduates and Go Blue!
