Organized by the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (LACS), these thematic workshops are offered to local K-14 teachers to learn about important topics in Latin America and the Caribbean and integrate new content into their curriculum. SCECH credit available.
2020 Teacher Training Workshop
Water and Environmental Justice: From Michigan to Latin America

All registered participants will receive 6-8 State Continuing Education Clock Hours (SCECHs).
6 SCECH credits for Saturday workshop participants + an additional 2 SCECH credits for attendees at the Thursday keynote lecture.
This event will bring together scholars, educators, and artists to provide Michigan K-14 teachers with context and resources for teaching about issues of water and environmental justice. We will explore place-based pedagogies to help educators connect water issues across local and global scales.
The workshop will offer materials and resources to help educators foster classroom dialogue through hands-on and interactive activities, including the use of print and visual multimedia.
The full-day workshop will include lectures, panel discussion, and interactive activities using water-themed prints at the University of Michigan Museum of Art, and a set of discussion questions and activities related to an exhibition of photographs comparing water crises in Flint and El Salvador.

Included in cost: Light breakfast, lunch (Central American tamales or pupusas plate from Pilar’s Tamales), book (Emily Wakild and Michelle K. Berry, A Primer for Teaching Environmental History, Duke University Press, 2018), and links to digital materials and resources specifically tailored to the event and the speakers.
- A podcast interview about teaching the Cochabamba Water Wars (Bolivia) between Dr. Timothy Lorek (University of Michigan) and Dr. Sarah Hines (University of Oklahoma)
- Screening of animated short Abuela Grillo (2009)
- Video chat and curriculum design studio with Emily Wakild (Boise State University) and Michelle K. Berry (University of Arizona) on using their book, A Primer for Teaching Environmental History
- A roundtable and Q and A on current research projects related to water and environmental justice in Latin America featuring Paloma Contreras and Stefania Almazan (both University of Michigan)
- A photography exhibit and lesson plan activity juxtaposing images of water crises in Flint, MI and El Salvador led by Dr. Paola Leon and Dr. Steven Smith (both School of Social Work, Grand Valley State University)
- An activity utilizing prints and images of water in Latin America and the Caribbean at the University of Michigan Museum of Art
- An optional lecture (2 SCECH credits) on Thursday, March 19 by Dr. Michelle Murphy (University of Toronto) titled “Toward a Decolonial Account of Chemical Exposure on the Lower Great Lakes.”
