March 2020

Jessica Kolbe

BA International Studies (Global Environment and Health), minor in Anthropology ‘20

Hometown: Whitehall, Michigan

Affiliations: Active Minds (co-director of Mental Health Monologues), English conversation circle facilitator, Sigma Iota Rho (International Studies Honors Society)

“This summer I volunteered in Chacraseca, Nicaragua for a month. One of my volunteer experiences there was helping visiting doctors during their 3 day health brigade. While working with them, I saw the effects that growing up in a developing country can have on a child. The lack of sufficient and consistent health care is detrimental to these children yet they still maintain a smile and happy spirit. Seeing the love and genuine care between everyone ensured to me that this is what I want to continue to participate in throughout the rest of my life”

Future plans: “I hope to get my master's in public health and eventually work for the WHO or UNICEF.”
