The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (LACS) fosters global perspectives through stimulating and innovative scholarship. The center’s faculty and staff strive to provide opportunities for students to pursue pressing questions related to Latin America and the Caribbean through classroom instruction and research and study abroad.

LACS offers Michigan students broad-based concentration and minor programs for undergraduates, and a graduate certificate program in Latin American and Caribbean studies for graduate students.

By placing region-specific study of Latin America and the Caribbean in a global context, LACS stimulates rigorous and innovative scholarship that fosters global citizenship.

Notably, LACS also organizes the competition for very generous U.S. Department of Education Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships for U-M students studying Portuguese, Quechua, and Nahuatl language.
