Masters in International and Regional Studies
Students interested in graduate degree in South Asian studies at the University of Michigan can pursue an MA degree through the Masters in International and Regional Studies (MIRS), which combines an interdisciplinary curriculum, rigorous methodological training, and international experiences with deep regional expertise.
Current Students
Prior to the 2019-20 academic year, CSAS offered the South Asian studies MA. Students who matriculated in Fall 2018 or earlier can refer to the SAS MA program requirements here.
CSAS also offers a certificate of graduate studies, and invites graduate and professional students in other University of Michigan departments to apply.

Center for South Asian Studies
The Center for South Asian Studies (CSAS) at the University of Michigan is among the world’s most prolific and prestigious centers for the production of knowledge on South Asia, and is the country’s foremost leader in international education. Our students benefit from direct interaction with more than 60 world-class faculty members at Michigan who devote all or part of their research to understanding South Asian histories, cultures, economies, environments, and politics. We offer courses in humanities and social science departments, as well as in the schools of Environment and Sustainability, Ford School of Public Policy, Law, Public Health, Ross School of Business, Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning.
Over the years our faculty and students have developed strong relationships with South Asian governments, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), businesses, universities, and research institutions. University of Michigan students enjoy access to these groups through summer internships, fellowships for research and study abroad, and regular opportunities to interact with visiting scholars and officials in the center’s scholarly lecture series and public outreach programming. Our alumni enjoy exciting careers in government, business, academia, and the professions.
The University of Michigan provides a wealth of resources for South Asian studies. With more than 300,000 titles in various formats (including 70,000 monographs and 1500 current serials), the South Asia Collection at the University of Michigan Library is among the world’s richest. In addition, the university museums maintains several world-renowned collections of South Asian materials. Our students also enjoy access to the University of Michigan’s Language Resource Center and training in a diverse array of South Asian languages. In addition to those regularly offered by the Center for South Asian Studies, students and faculty regularly participate in the events and programs offered by the many other international centers and programs supported by the International Institute at the University of Michigan.
