Digital Curriculum

Funded by a generous grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Digital Islamic Studies Curriculum (DISC) is a unique initiative that seeks to provide students at Big Ten universities a robust curriculum specializing in Islamic Studies. The DISC initiative utilizes a synchronous-learning technology supported by the Big Ten Academic Alliance called “CourseShare” and its administrative framework to increase student access to specialized courses and faculty expertise that are spread across Big Ten schools. A committee, formed by representatives from Big Ten schools and administered by the University of Michigan, is working to define, create, and implement a curriculum that will offer a broad set of courses that investigate Islam as a religion, as a civilization, as a myriad of cultural and historic traditions, and as the basis in some settings for political ideology.
