Cultivating Nationhood in Imperial Russia: The Periodical Press and the Formation of a Modern Armenian Identity

Monday, November 15, 2010, lawyer and author Lisa Khachaturian presented her research to the Armenian Studies Program (ASP) and wider community. Presenting research from her book “Cultivating Nationhood in Imperial Russia: The Periodical Press and the Formation of a Modern Armenian State,” Khachaturian sought to illuminate issues involved with reshaping Armenian identity in order to make sure it kept pace with changing times. Beginning the lecture with the question, “Where does language/culture come from?” the foundation was laid to examine the lives, writings and relationships of the intelligentsia of the time and thus the periodicals for which they wrote.
