Organization Description: European Movement Albania is an independent, non-profit organization, combining think tank and advocacy instruments. EMA was established in February 2007, in response to Albania’s increased efforts at speeding up the process of preparing for EU accession. EMA regards European Integration as largely beneficial but recognizes that in many respects the process does not work well. Therefore they aim to promote new ideas for improving the policy development process. website

Research and Marketing Intern

Duration: If offered the position, interns and their supervisor will decide on specific dates of the internship between May and August, for a minimum of 6 weeks.

Number of Positions: 1

Responsibilities:

  • Manage the online newsletter Eurospeak by contributing with different articles and assisting in updating the newsletter on daily basis
  • Provide assistance in organizing activities
  • Prepare informative materials such as brochures and leaflets

Compensation:

National Authority for Opening the Secret Police Files

Location: Tirana

Organization Description: Albania’s National Authority to Open the Secret Police Files of the Former Communist Regime was formally established in 2017 to implement law 45/2015: “On the right to information on the files of the former state security services during communist times. Its mission is to “Inform the Albanian public on the activity of the communist dictatorship State Security Service (Sigurimi), provide unfettered citizen access to Sigurimi files, and preserve the record of oppression in order to support the democratic values of justice, truth and responsibility for future generations.” website

 

Security Archive Research Intern

Duration: Internships are for 8 weeks, from May 20-July 20.

Number of Positions: 4

Position Description: The Albanian State Secret Security Services conducted extensive surveillance on King Ahmet Zogu, the Albanian Royal Family, and the Royal Court. This summer, working closely with Prince Leka Zogu II, interns will begin the work of surveying the Sigurimi (State Security Service) files on the Albania Royal Family. Interns will work directly in the National Authority, with the assistance of the Chief Archivist, the Chairwoman, and a historian specialized in the communist past and the Albanian Royal Family.

Compensation:

  • Unpaid
  • On-the-ground support will be provided for finding housing, integrating into the community and culture, and establishing local networks.

Language Requirements:

  • Intermediate reading level in Albanian, with assistance of online dictionary and translation sources. Desire to improve Albanian language while here.

Desired Skills/Specialties:

  • Excellent analytic ability and an interest in learning about archive research.
  • Able to read Albanian at an intermediate level (with the assistance of dictionary / translation sources) and a desire to improve Albanian language ability (interns will work with local cohorts to assist with reading and translation).
  • Personal or professional interests in fields including, but not limited to: the history and politics of Albania or, more broadly, WWII and/ or the Cold War; national security apparatus; public history; national / collective memory; communism / post-communist transition; transitional justice; reparations and restitution after mass collective violence; national reconciliation.
  • Comfortable working with a research team as well as be able to make active contributions to the team’s thinking.
  • Conduct close, careful reading of archive materials and to analyze documents for things such as purpose (who produced it and why) or audience (for whom is the document produced).

Additional Information: This is a historic opportunity, and excellent pre-professional training for students with interest in fields such as History / Public History; Library/information systems/archive studies; Law; Political Science; Anthropology/sociology/ psychology. This summer’s work will be the beginning of a multi-year project, and interns will play an important role in mapping the extent of the Sigirumi’s holdings on the Albanian Royal Family, key issues and themes that the surveillance data exposes, and in developing research protocols for continued work with the files and holdings.  

State Minister of Diaspora, Republic of Albania

Location: Tirana

Organization Description: The mission of the State Minister for Diaspora is to promote and strengthen the overall cooperation between the Albanian communities living outside of the Republic of Albania and the host countries, in every aspect. website

Finance Intern

Duration: Internships are for 8 weeks between 15 May and 30 July. Exact dates will be determined with intern and employer upon selection. Interns will work approximately 40 hours/week.

Number of Positions: 1

Position Description: Interns will work with Ministry staff in support of the overall mission to promote and strengthen the relationships amongst Albanians around the world. Interns will learn about the work of the Ministry, and support Ministry Staff in data collection and analysis, research, and in preparing monthly statements and reports of findings.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, creative problem solver, highly motivated, with both independent initiative and ability to work well in a team.
  • Good organization and attention to detail, combined with an ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively.
  • Understanding of what motivates people and ability to think strategically for the long-term.
  • Students seeking careers in finance or law, with the ability to conceptualize strategies that will further the Ministry’s mission, are especially desired.

Position Description: Interns will work with Ministry staff in support of the overall mission to promote and strengthen the relationships amongst Albanians around the world. Interns will learn about the work of the Ministry, and contribute their specific knowledge and skills to produce informational and promotional materials, assist with events and activities, facilitate public relations, and support Ministry Staff in research, analysis, and conceptualization of strategies that will further the Ministry’s mission.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, creative problem solver, highly motivated, with both independent initiative and ability to work well in a team.
  • Good organization and attention to detail, combined with an ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively.
