Dan Slater, Ronald and Eileen Weiser Professor of Emerging Democracies and professor of political science, co-authored the article "Nationalism, Authoritarianism, and Democracy: Historical Lessons from South and Southeast Asia" with Maya Tudor, associate professor of government and public policy at Oxford University’s Blavatnik School of Government. They compare the different experiences of democracy in the region, and link these democratic successes and authoritarian durability to the strength of national identiy.

Dan Slater specializes in the politics and history of enduring dictatorships and emerging democracies, with a regional focus on Southeast Asia. His research interests include comparative politics, international relations, world politics, and methodology.
