The Copernicus Center for Polish Studies has organized a stimulating series of events for witner 2019, including two lectures related to the exhibit “100 Years of Polish Independence: Zakopane 1918.” The exhibit is a collection of photographs from the archives of the Tatra Museum in Zakopane, Poland. It tells the unique story of the short-lived Republic of Zakopane, which was established in the concluding weeks of the First World War.

These events fall under the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia winter programming theme, "Europe, Old and New." As 2018 marks the centennial of the end of the First World War, the collapse of empires, and the redrawing of Europe’s map, the series Europe, Old and New will explore those themes and critically examine where we are now, at a time of democratic crisis and rising populism throughout Europe.
