December 2022 - Habeeb El-amir

BA International Studies (Comparative Culture and Identity); BA Political Science ‘23

Hometown: Grand Haven, MI

Affiliations: Model United Nations at the University of Michigan, Michigan Foreign Policy Council, Donia Human Rights Fellows Program

“This past summer, I interned at the Office of Security and Human Rights in the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor at the U.S. Department of State. The majority of the work I did was tracking gross violations of human rights in Middle Eastern and North African countries and discussing these cases with State Department officials. I also worked on several additional projects, including developing a list of best practices to address transnational repression. Interning at the State Department was an incredible experience, as I was not only able to see how foreign policy operates but was also able to contribute to foreign policy efforts on upholding respect for human rights in the Middle East.”

Future Plans: “I hope to attend graduate school to obtain a Master’s degree in International Studies and eventually pursue a career in human rights work at an international organization or in government!”
