The Spring 2011 edition of International Connections considers how democratization can affect foreign investment, and how existing cultural mythologies are reflected in the perception of rights and the outcome of democracy movements. Featured are articles authored by current CICS faculty fellows Anne Pitcher (Afroamerican and African Studies & Political Science) and David Porter (English & Comparative Literature), as well as contributions from two undergraduate students, International Studies concentrator Marissa Gawel and Spanish/Biological Chemistry concentrator Nathan VanderVeen who received a CICS International Internship grant for the summer of 2010 to assist in hospitals and orphanages in rural Huancayo, Perú.

In the winter of 2010-11 we considered labor standards in the garment industry, with CICS faculty associate Brad Farnsworth, the director of the U-M Center for International Business Education (CIBE), offering a piece on international influence on labor standards in developing countries, and U-M graduate students Charles Clark (MBA and MPP programs) and Sarah Kanter (law school) investigating garment industry violence in Bangladesh. Featured as well is an essay by Kira Youdina, an LSA political science undergraduate, who received a CICS International Internship grant for the summer of 2010 to work for the NGO Geneva for Human Rights. Also included is a 1997-2006 timeline tracing the University of Michigan's own response to sweatshop conditions in facilities manufacturing U-M licensed apparel.
