We're happy to announce our 2020 Sang Yong Nam Award Winner, Danielle Kim! Although we were unable to gather in person this year, the faculty, staff, and students of the Nam Center wanted to celebrate through this specially made video. Congratulations from all of us, Danielle!
Danielle Kim graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in a Film, Television, and Media. She plans to utilize video and social media to share news of and bring in support for refugees, trafficked people, and education inequality. Danielle has served as a Nam Center Undergraduate Fellow since 2017. She presented her research on the underground sex-trafficking business in South Korea at the Korean Studies Undergraduate Exchange Conference in 2018. Since her sophomore year, Danielle has been an active member of Liberty in North Korea (LiNK) and currently serves as the organizations president. Post-graduation, Danielle hopes to use her honed video-production skills, developed through serving her church's documentation ministry team and through her classes, to go to California and further advance them before working for nonprofits.
The Sang-Yong Nam Award was established to remember Elder Sang-Yong Nam’s dedication to Korean studies. The Award is given to a graduating senior or recent graduate of the University of Michigan, whose academic achievement, citizenship, service to the community, and commitment to Korean studies exemplify the values to which Elder Sang-Yong Nam dedicated his life.
