This year, the Nam Center’s fourth annual Korea from A Single Shard grant was awarded to four teachers:

  • Ms. Ann Marie Borders and Ms. Karen McDonald, 4th grade at Carpenter Elementary
  • Ms. Martha Spain, 6th-8th grade at Global Preparatory Academy
  • Ms. Sherry Mockles, 7th grade at Flint Southwestern Classical Academy
  • Ms. Rae Hawkins, 7th grade at Thurgood Marshall Elementary/Middle School

These teachers will be provided with resources to support their teaching of the culture and history of ancient Korea through the Newberry Award winning YA novel, A Single Shard by Linda Sue Park. In March and April of 2015, in collaboration with UMMA, their students will take part in a docent-led tour of the Woon-Hyung Lee and Korea Foundation Gallery of Korean Art and participate in a hands-on demonstration of the Sanggam technique of decorating celadon described in A Single Shard using Korean inspired motifs.

Congratulations to the teachers of the 2014-2015 Korea from A Single Shard program!
