Masters Endowment Award

Due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, all travel must follow current guidelines, which are detailed in the International Institute Travel Policy.

Fellowship Description

Endowment awards ranging from $2500 to $7500 may be given based on academic merit, language training, field research, archival research, and internship support. Tuition support for academic excellence and dual degree programs is also offered through the Lieberthal-Rogel Endowment.

Submission

All application materials must be submitted on the International Institute Fellowships & Grants online portal using the FLAS or CCS-CJS Academic Year Fellowship application for academic year funding or FLAS or CCS-CJS Summer Fellowship application for summer language funding, depending on the period of funding requested.  The deadline for these applications is Jan 15.  Students may apply for both periods as long as distinct projects are proposed for each fellowship period.

Use the application for Asia Centers Research-Internship Fellowships for degree-related research travel and/or internship support during Summer (May-August).  The deadline for this application is March 1.

Support for Masters Students

General Academic Support

A limited number of awards of varying amounts are made based on academic merit and may be used to support academic pursuits related to the students' degree programs.

Requirements & Eligibility

  • All graduate students in Chinese studies at the University of Michigan, regardless of citizenship, are eligible to apply.

Dual-Degree Students

$10,000 per term for any student in a LRCCS-approved dual-degree program who takes two or more Chinese-studies courses in the funded term.

Requirements & Eligibility

  • Incoming students must be admitted by both programs and must matriculate into both programs. Current dual-degree students must be in good academic standing.
  • Recipients of this funding must enroll full time and take two or more Chinese-studies courses in the funded term.

Off-Campus Fieldwork/Archival Research

This $5,000 award, renewable once, is offered in support of substantial off-campus field/archival research as part of the applicant's thesis work.

Requirements & Eligibility

  • Applicants must be of good academic standing and have completed at least two terms in the MA program.

Internship Grant

Awards of up to $2,500 to support China-related internships at public or private institutions around the world.

Requirements & Eligibility

  • Applicants must be of good academic standing and have completed at least two terms in the MA program.
  • Recipients must successfully complete the funded internships and submit to LRCCS a two-page report on the experience.
