The Martinez-Leary Stoffel Fund, established in loving memory of Dr. Joan Leary Martinez, supports University of Michigan students studying/working in communities in Latin America and the Caribbean. A native of Boston and a pediatrician, Dr. Martinez lived in Honduras for 5 decades, serving as a passionate advocate for the health and education of children. Dr. Martinez’s own children grew up in Honduras, and her daughter and son-in-law (Drs. John and Elena Stoffel) serve on the faculty of U-M Medical School. In establishing this fund, Dr. Martinez’s family wish to inspire and support students who seek to experience the rich culture of Latin America and develop beneficial collaborations among individuals and communities.
