Alexander Stephens, PhD candidate in history, is the 2022-2023 recipient of the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies Alfredo D. & Luz Maria P. Gutierrez Dissertation Award for his dissertation, “Excludable: Cubans, Migration, and Carceral States, 1959-1996.”
LACS offers one PhD candidate the Gutierrez Dissertation Award each year to support dissertation write-up. We particularly encourage dissertation projects that have interdisciplinary appeal. After a thorough review of many wonderful proposals this year, the LACS selection committee is pleased to recognize the high quality of Alexander's scholarly work.
I am honored to receive this award and extremely grateful to LACS, the Fellowships Committee, and Alfredo D. and Luz Maria P. Gutierrez for creating this opportunity. The experiences of the people at the center of this project are important, and I am excited to focus on helping to tell their stories over the next year.
