We welcome Nancy Khalil as a new LSA Collegiate Fellow in the Department of American Culture, and faculty in Arab and Muslim American Studies. The LSA Collegiate Fellowship is a new and major initiative aimed at recruiting exceptional early-career scholars in all liberal arts fields who are committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the academy, and preparing those scholars for tenure-track appointments in LSA. Prof. Khalil’s research focuses on the American Muslim population. Her most recent work studies the politics of American Islam through in-depth research on Islamic higher education institutes and religious clerics, or imams, in the US.

Prof. Khalil joins the University of Michigan with a Ph.D. in anthropology from Harvard University. Prof. Khalil served as a Muslim chaplain at Wellesley College as well as a postdoctoral fellow at Yale’s Center on Race, Indigeneity, and Transnational Migration.
