The Department of Women's Studies and the Institute for Research on Women and Gender present the 2012 Motorola Lecture on Gender and the Media, delivered by Bothaina Kamel, a well-known television news anchor, long time pro-democracy activist, and the first and only female presidential candidate in Egypt. Since the late 1980s Kamel has addressed issues of women’s rights, human rights and corruption in her high profile position. She is deeply connected to the solidarity and human rights campaigns of peaceful protest and organizing in Egypt. Despite harassment and beatings by government and military authorities in the last decade, Kamel continues her brave work for human rights and real democracy.

Co-sponsored by the Center for Middle Eastern and North African Studies, Center for the Education of Women Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund, Department of Near Eastern Studies, Howard R. Marsh Center in the Department of Communication Studies,  Global Islamic Studies Center, Rackham Graduate School, Department of Political Science, and the University of Michigan Museum of Art.
