ISIS Workshop: Text Players: Ulama in Islamic History

Friday, October 21, 2011
12:00 AM
Room 2609 International Institute School of Social Work Building

In this workshop, Fuad Jabali will explore how Ulama use texts as media to neutralize internal and external conflicts -- how texts, in other words, can be used to view the conflicts that they give rise to. He will suggest that the skill with which Ulama work texts has the effect of establishing equilibrium. His points of reference will be ninth-century Hadith scholarship and the history of Muhammad b. al-Hanafiyah that was composed in 15th-16th century Aceh. Please RSVP by Tuesday, Oct 18 to Yoni Brack (ybrack@umich.edu).
