About
Alexis (Gou) Wu is pursuing a Masters in International and Regional Studies with a specialization in Chinese studies after having graduated with a BA in linguistics from the University of Chicago (2017). Research interests include Chinese historical phonology and dialectology, as well as the ways in which language variation may have influenced the fields of language pedagogy and linguistics themselves throughout China's history. Having grown up in Northeastern China, Alexis is also fascinated by the history of contact between Northern variants of Chinese and neighboring languages such as Japanese and Manchu. Fluent in Mandarin and English, proficient in Japanese and Spanish, and conversant in Russian, Alexis works as a freelance literary translator when outside of academia and is now also working as a programming coordinator for U-M's Center for Japanese Studies.
