MIRS-Islamic Studies Student
Islam Jaffal is pursuing a Masters in International and Regional Studies with an Islamic Studies specialization. She received her BA in behavioral sciences from the University of Michigan – Dearborn in 2021 where she also worked as a research assistant. As an undergraduate, she was recognized as a Difference Maker and awarded the Chancellor’s Medallion. Islam is interested in studying anti-Shi’ism as a manifestation of Islamophobic discourse and its relation to Western foreign policy. Having lived between Dearborn, Michigan and Beirut, Lebanon, she has interacted with various Lebanese Shi’i communities. She also interned with the United Nations Development Program and the Ministry of Finance in Lebanon before moving back to the United States.
