MIRS-Southeast Asian Studies Student
About
Gwen’s interest in international studies is rooted primarily in regional interactions between diverse political-economic systems and how they manifest in differing state-society relations, with Vietnam and the Vietnamese language being her primary interests at U-M. She especially hopes to learn more about how the intricacies of these systems within Southeast Asia affect disadvantaged communities Additionally, Gwen conducts local LGBTQ+ student advocacy work and has spent the last year with the Idaho Suicide Prevention Hotline as a night-shift crisis responder. Her past research has focused on the upland Dara’ang people, originally from Shan State of Myanmar, and their evolving interaction with the Thai state, with her work currently accepted for publication in the ASIANetwork Exchange journal.
