PICS alum and former fellow with the UN World Food Programme in South Africa through Princeton in Africa, Melissa (Mel) Gibson, joins us to discuss her experience with this fellowship and offers her advice to students who may be interested in applying.

Melissa (Mel) Gibson is a second-year MBA student at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business. She focuses specifically on sustainability within ag-tech (especially the future of food/food systems) and clean-tech/energy. Over the summer, Mel interned with Rivian’s Renewable Energy team. Prior to Ross, she worked in innovating financing for the Clinton Health Access Initiative’s (CHAI) Global Markets Team where she supported the development of CHAI’s diabetes strategy in Egypt and South Africa and helped scope deal opportunities in partnership with MedAccess, a DFID-backed not-for-profit investment fund. Previously, Mel worked in business development for Boston Consulting Group’s healthcare and private equity practice areas and was a consultant with the UN World Food Programme based in Johannesburg where she worked cross-functionally with donor relations, government partnerships, and program/nutrition teams across the Southern Africa region.

Mel holds a BA in International Studies and African Studies from the University of Michigan and will graduate a double-Wolverine in spring 2023.
