2023 CEDER-NRC Teacher Workshop

A World on the Move: Teaching Global Issues with Case Studies of Climate Change and Human Migration

April 22, 2023 | 9 AM-3 PM
LSA Building (Multi-Purpose Room 1040), 500 S State St.

This workshop will introduce Grade 6-12 teachers (but all are welcome!) to the complex issues of climate change and human migration, helping participants to contextualize these issues within various regions of the world.

Through the lens of area studies we will learn about different regional case studies with a focus on climate change and human migratory patterns that occur as a result. The workshop will discuss and consider pedagogical implications of integrating these topics into the classroom.

Participants will learn from expert presenters and work in small groups to review materials and begin to plan their own lessons. Instructional resources will also be provided. Teachers will leave with a more nuanced understanding of these topics and ideas for how to make the issue of climate change and its effects on human migration more approachable for a young audience.

MDE SCECH units will be available.

Registration Fee: $20.00

Included in cost: lunch, coffee/tea and snacks, a full lesson plan and resource guide, and other materials.

After submitting your registration information, you will be directed to a secured U-M payment site.
