Overview
The Donia Human Rights Center (DHRC) in partnership with the Belgrade Centre for Human Rights (BCHR) (Belgrade, Serbia) seeks applications for a fellowship to support a summer internship with the Belgrade Centre. The successful applicant is expected to spend eight weeks, between May and August 2023, working with the Belgrade Centre for Human Rights team in different programs: Asylum and Migration Program, Criminal Justice Programme, Youth Program, and Rule of Law and Human Rights Program.
The fellowship provides a stipend of $5,000 to defray the costs of living for eight weeks. Applications will be reviewed by a review committee from DHRC and Belgrade Centre for Human Rights. The fellowship will provide an additional $1,000 to reimburse travel expenses to the Belgrade Centre.
Upon completion of this internship, fellows are expected to deliver a presentation of their internship projects and experiences, and submit a written reflection to DHRC.
The goal of the fellowship is to support an advanced U-M undergraduate student with demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in human rights. Applications will be evaluated on the quality of the statement of purpose, the applicant’s record of achievement, and their promise for the internship position with Belgrade Centre for Human Rights (BCHR).

Eligibility Requirements
This fellowship is intended for advanced U-M undergraduates (rising juniors and seniors) focusing on international human rights. It is not open to graduating seniors (i.e., students graduating in WN23 or SP/SU23). Students must return to campus for at least one semester after completing this internship.
Position Description
Desired Qualifications
Being a human rights activist as well the process of supporting the enhancement of human rights, is quite challenging work. Ability to use legal and other skills to speak out and fight against human rights violations and respect of fundamental rights and freedoms, is one of the core attitudes for the BCHR staff.
Basic knowledge of human rights is essential for the internship. Particular areas of familiarity that would be helpful include refugee rights; civil and political rights; gender-based violence; economic, social and cultural rights; minority rights; and environmental rights. Interest in the media and human rights; perceptions of history; comparative legal, political and cultural norms of human rights; and public opinion surveys are also welcome.
Cultural sensitization is also very important. Cultural differences and similarities between people are important to understand, as the BCHR refugees and integration programs work with a variety of different nationalities. Students should also be ready to gain new knowledge and always learn and remain open minded.
Experience in social science and knowledge of Balkan countries would be advantageous.
