2007 Summer in South Asia Fellows

Christopher Aten, Nursing
Chris spent two months at a hospital in India. He studied the religious and spiritual aspects of health care, and compared them to similar aspects of health care in the U.S. At the hospital, he conducted interviews of health care workers to gain perspective on how they approached their patients' diverse religious beliefs, and how they were incorporated into their treatment. His hope was to explore how similar strategies might be applied in an American hospital setting.

Sara Baumann
Sara worked on public health with YRG Care, specifically related HIV transmission among female sex workers in Chennai India.

Nidhi Chaudhary
Nidhi interned with Unity Charitable Trust.  Nidhi visited the members’ houses to see their position.  Most of the families faced gender problems.  Even though the women members earn for their families, no regard is given to them.  This particular subject is raised and volunteers from abroad give their suggestions and ideas.

Sarah Simmons, RC Social Sciences/French
Sarah volunteered and lived for six weeks at the Vatsalya orphanage, just north of Jaipur. While at the orphanage, she studied the effects of trauma on the children and how grief factored into everyday life. She was especially interested in the interactions of orphans with other people, specifically non-orphans. She also examined the logistical workings of the orphanage and how the orphanage was actually run.

Laura Van Hyfte
Laura interned for Lokniti, a research program within the Center for the Study of Developing Societies.  Her internship contained three goals: (1) gain a better understanding of India’s government and political processes; (2) become more familiar with democratic trends in India; and (3) gain new perspectives on American democracy and political institutions, through analyzing India’s government.  She also obtained insight on the differences between Indian and American youths, in regard to aspirations, ideologies, political expectations, etc.
