External Funding Opportunities

ARIT fellowships in the Humanities and Social Sciences in Turkey

The American Research Institute in Turkey will offer ARIT fellowships for research in Turkey.  Grants for tenures up to one year will be considered, however, some preference is given to projects of shorter duration. Stipends generally range from $4,000 to $16,000. ARIT operates hostel, research, and study facilities for researchers in Turkey at its branch centers in Istanbul and Ankara.

Beinecke Scholarship Program

The program seeks to encourage and enable highly motivated students to pursue opportunities available to them and to be courageous in the selection of a graduate course of study in the arts, humanities and social sciences.

Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships*

A Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship provides tuition and a stipend to students studying designated foreign languages in combination with area studies or international aspects of professional studies. The priority is to encourage the study of less commonly taught languages. FLAS Fellowships are administered by the U-M Area Studies Centers and are awarded competitively through annual fellowship competitions. 

Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad (DDRA) Fellowships*

The U.S. Department of Education (US/ED) Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad (DDRA) Fellowships are for students in certain PhD programs in the social sciences or humanities who need to conduct 6-12 months of dissertation research abroad.

IIE Generation Study Abroad Travel Grants

IIE Generation Study Abroad Travel Grants are available for U.S. students from a broad range of backgrounds to make it possible for them to participate in an academic, internship or service-learning experiences abroad.

International Institute Individual Fellowships*

The International Institute Individual Fellowships are designed to support U-M, regardless of citizenship, who are enrolled in a degree program and wish to participate in internships or conduct research abroad. Award amounts are up to $5,000.

Jacob K. Javits Fellowships Program

This program provides fellowships to students of superior academic ability—selected on the basis of demonstrated achievement, financial need, and exceptional promise—to undertake study at the doctoral and Master of Fine Arts level in selected fields of arts, humanities, and social sciences.

MAWISTA Scholarship for Students Studying Abroad with a Child

MAWISTA promotes young people with a child who decided to study abroad. One semester, or even the complete study abroad gives many students the opportunity to let their dreams of living abroad come true and also to get some advantages for their future career. MAWISTA offers scholarships every year!

Mellon Fellowships for Dissertation Research in Original Sources

The Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) is pleased to offer fellowships generously funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for dissertation research in the humanities in original sources. The program offers about fifteen competitively awarded fellowships a year. Each provides a stipend of $2,000 per month for periods ranging from 9-12 months.

NAASR Research Grants in Armenian Studies

The National Association for Armenian Studies and Research (NAASR) is prepared to consider applications for grants for research within the field of Armenian Studies.

Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans

Each fellowship supports up to two years of graduate study in the U.S. for a New American (a green card holder or naturalized citizen if born abroad; a child of naturalized citizens if born in this country).
