Islam's American Frontiers

Given the historical origins and cultural geography of Islam, America is in many ways a frontier zone. Frontiers are places of anxiety, de-routinization and beginnings. Frontiers offer a special experience because they reveal what is taken for granted, allowing us to historicize the past and imagine new beginnings. This talk is based on some observations about the ways in which Islam settles in its American context and is naturalized by Muslims in entirely new spaces.
