“After the Arab Spring: Democratic Summer, not Islamic Winter”

Thursday, September 20, 2012
12:00 AM
Michigan League, Vandenberg Room

A public lecture by Juan Cole, Richard P. Mitchell Collegiate Professor of History and director of the Center for Middle Eastern and North African Studies at the University of Michigan.

Many observers have argued that the largely leftist and democratic upheavals in the Arab World in 2011 were followed by the specter of theocracy. In fact, those revolutions led to a new kind of open electoral process in which many political actors across the spectrum have played a key role. It will be argued that Muslim fundamentalist’s dominance of these post-revolutionary societies has been exaggerated.
