Koichi Anderson
College of Literature, Science, and the Arts
A third year student in LSA, Koichi plans to continue his studies in Japanese and mathematics. He was an intern at Moriumius, an NGO in Japan's Tohoku region, and worked many roles doing kitchen work, outdoor labor, and community outreach programming. He valued his time abroad and will possibly seek future educational or employment opportunities in Japan.
Dalton Brown
College of Literature, Science and the Arts
Dalton is a sophomore studying a variety of subjects through General Studies, but is currently focusing on Japanese. He spent the summer of 2018 as an English teaching assistant at the Kyoto University of Arts and Crafts, followed by a similar position for the company Come on Out Japan - where he was able to teach in Tokyo, Nagoya, and Shizuoka. After graduation, he hopes be able to use Japanese every day while working to achieve entrepreneurial ambitions.
Jhoanne Castro
Stamps School of Art & Design
Jhoanne is a rising senior at the Stamps School of Art & Design with a minor in Asian Languages & Cultures. She spent summer 2018 interning at Moriumius, a learning center in Ogatsu, Japan, with a focus on sustainability, the environment, and revitalizing the community of Ogatsu after the tragic events of the 3/11 earthquake tore everything down. After graduation she hopes to pursue a career that allows her to continue to learn and connect with her roots in Asia, and showcase that through her work.
Agnes Chiu
Stamps School of Art & Design
Agnes is a junior at the Stamps School of Art & Design with a minor in Asian Languages and Culture. She spent summer 2018 interning at Jones Lang LaSalle and Roland DG, in the Research Department and the Global Marketing & Communications Department, respectively. After graduation she hopes to pursue a career that relates to design, marketing, or international business management.
Kenji Johnston
College of Engineering
Kenji is a senior studying mechanical engineering and Japanese language. He worked as a Product Engineering Intern for Continental Automotive in Yokohama, Japan. Kenji has a passion towards mechanical design, and is extremely curious with how different societies utilize mechanical inventions in their culture.
Sophie Mirza
Stamps School of Art and Design
After the town of Ogatsu and nearby Ishinomaki were devastated by an earthquake and tsunami in 2011, these areas became the focus of revitalisation and sustainability efforts in collaboration with industry. Sophie spent the summer of 2018 working with Moriumius, a sustainability camp educating urban people about struggling rural communities. She intends to pursue a dual degree in mathematics and Art and Design. She is pictured here with baby goat Chagall.
Francine Moriguchi
College of Literature, Science, and the Arts
Francine recently graduated from the School of LSA with a Bachelor of Science (Microbiology). She spent summer 2018 interning at the Funabashi Orthopedic Surgical Hospital. Her main projects included assisting an orthopedic physician to compose his research paper, concerning UCL reconstruction therapy and prevention, in English, and creating a teaching portfolio for ESL students in a medical setting. She hopes to pursue a career in medicine and introduce Japanese longevity-promoting lifestyle habits to underserved communities of America.
Ian Robinson
College of Engineering
Ian is a sophomore in the College of Engineering double majoring in Computer Science and Industrial & Operations Engineering. In the summer of 2018, he worked as an intern for Central Glass in its chemical manufacturing division located in Kawasaki, just south of Tokyo. His main tasks during the internship included hosting weekly English lessons and translating technical and administrative documents into English. After graduating, he hopes to find a career that will allow him to live in or take long trips to Japan.
Katalin Schmidt
College of Literature, Science, and the Arts; School of Education
Katalin is a rising senior at the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. She studies English and expects to receive a secondary education certification in the subject through the School of Education. Katalin's internship allowed her to apply her teacher education skills to the real world by evaluating and meeting the needs of her Japanese students while they practiced conversing in English. After graduation, Katalin hopes to teach English abroad.
Shuta Suzuki
College of Literature, Science, and the Arts
Shuta is a senior majoring in Computer Science and minoring in Linguistics. He spent the summer of 2018 interning at Bloomberg LP, a media and financial technology company, where he wrote scripts to automate tasks and learned about natural language processing for Japanese corpus. Shuta is interested in working in the financial industry, and he hopes to make a global impact through the utilization of computing technologies.
Lauren Ayako Tischler
College of Literature, Science, and the Arts; School for Environment and Sustainability
Ayako is a junior majoring in Environment and Economics with focus on intersections in sustainable business. She spent summer 2018 interning at Moriumius, a sustainable education center in rural Japan. Her work included research & design to create a guide for future interns, organizing guest programs, and support for children's education camps. After graduation, Ayako plans to pursue a career exploring Japan's sustainable future.
Jinyu Wang
College of Literature, Science, and the Arts
Jinyu is a senior at LSA, majoring in Economics and Screen Arts and Cultures. Her 2018 summer internship was at Roland DG Corporate, a manufacturer of digital devices, in Hamamatsu. As a marketing communication assistant, she mainly worked on the global marketing plan of a new product with the purpose of expanding market and raising awareness. She plans to pursue a career in marketing and advertising fields after graduation.
Kay Wright
Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning
Kay studies architecture at the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning. During the summer of 2018, she participated in an internship with Horibe Associates. Kay hopes the experience at Horibe Associates will help inform how she approaches the process, concepts, and contexts of architectural design and its technology.
