U-M Professor, Novelist Natalie Bakopoulos on Greek Crisis

The humanist perspective on current events in Greece

The Center for European Studies and Modern Greek Program at the University of Michigan are pleased to present a Conversations on Europe lecture by Natalie Bakopoulos titled, “Athens, Notice Your Poet.” Bakopoulos is a lecturer in U-M’s English Department and released her first novel earlier this year titled The Green Shore. The book is set in Athens during the 1967 military coup, a time of great political upheaval. In her lecture, Bakopoulos will give the humanist perspective on current events in Greece.

Natalie Bakopoulos was born in Dearborn, Michigan, and received an MFA in fiction from U-M. For her writing she has received the O. Henry Award, a Hopwood Award, and a Platsis Prize for Work on the Greek Legacy. She is a contributing editor for Fiction Writers Review, an online journal, and her writing has appeared in Ninth Letter, Tin House, Granta, Salon.com, and The New York Times.
