The Center for European Studies is pleased to announce that Karla Mallette’s book, European Modernity and the Arab Mediterranean: Toward a New Philology and a Counter-Orientalism (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2010), will receive the 13th Annual Susanne M. Glasscock Humanities Book Prize for Interdisciplinary Scholarship, awarded by the Glasscock Center for Humanities Research at Texas A&M University, on Wednesday, February 15th, 2012. Following the award ceremony Professor Mallette will present a lecture titled "Lingua franca in the Mediterranean." The award comes with a $1,000 prize.

Karla Mallette is Associate Professor of Italian and Near Eastern Studies and Interim Director of CES (2011-12). Her primary research interest is on medieval literature in the Mediterranean region. She is the author of The Kingdom of Sicily, 1100-1250: A Literary History, also published by the University of Pennsylvania Press.
