ASC director Andries Coetzee was recently awarded a University of Michigan Faculty Recognition Award. In addition to being the director of the African Studies Center at U-M’s International Institute, Coetzee is a linguistics professor, editor of the flagship journal Language, and senior advisor to the provost for U-M’s Africa engagement. U-M’s Faculty Recognition Award is granted to mid-career faculty who have demonstrated, among other criteria, “outstanding achievements in scholarly research,” and “distinguished participation” within the university.
I deeply appreciate the opportunities that I have had to develop my career at the University of Michigan. U-M is a value-driven institution with a mission focused on the common good. It is a privilege to be a part of the U-M community through the Department of Linguistics, the African Studies Center, and the International Institute.
Through Coetzee’s service to ASC, he has helped to continue a rich tradition of Africa-related work at U-M. Founded on the principle of the primacy of the ongoing, reciprocal relationship between U-M and African universities and scholars, ASC facilitates and funds cross-continental research programs, grants, and conferences. ASC brings early-career scholars based on the continent to campus for research residencies that benefit the scholar’s career and enrich the intellectual community of U-M’s students, faculty, and staff.
