On September 13, 2024, the Center for Armenian Studies (CAS) at the University of Michigan had the honor of welcoming H.E. Lilit Makunts, Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia to the United States. A philologist by training and a seasoned political leader, Ambassador Makunts brought with her a wealth of academic and governmental experience to an open forum focused on strengthening ties between Armenia and its diaspora institutions. The Ambassador’s visit was part of a broader initiative to engage with diaspora communities across the country, and her time in Ann Arbor focused on building stronger bridges between the Armenian government and institutions of higher learning in the United States.

During the visit, the Ambassador met with a wide range of university stakeholders, including faculty, students, staff, and members of the local Armenian community. The open forum was marked by a lively, respectful exchange of ideas and questions. Topics ranged from the trajectory of Armenia’s current administration to the evolving role of cultural diplomacy, and how institutions like CAS can play a vital role in advancing Armenian cultural and scholarly presence abroad.

This visit also created an important opportunity for CAS to begin exploring creative and mutually beneficial partnerships with the Republic of Armenia. As part of the dialogue, ideas were exchanged about bringing students from Armenia to study at institutions like the University of Michigan, as well as initiating more structured academic exchanges. These potential partnerships aim to foster cultural exchange, academic development, and deeper mutual understanding between Armenian scholars and the broader U.S. academic community.

The Center for Armenian Studies remains committed to facilitating creative, forward-looking partnerships with institutions in Armenia. Ambassador Makunts’ visit was a vital step in opening new lines of dialogue and laying the groundwork for future academic and cultural cooperation.
