- "Freedom Papers: An Atlantic Creole Itinerary." This book (co-authored with Jean Michel Hébrard) follows a woman called "Rosalie of the Poulard nation" from captivity in the Senegal River Valley around 1785, to enslavement in the French Caribbean colony of Saint-Domingue, exile in Cuba, return to independent Haiti, and a final journey to slaveholding Louisiana. The story then continues through her daughter's life in New Orleans, France, and Belgium, and her grandson's equal rights activism during the Civil War and Reconstruction in the United States. The emphasis throughout is on ordinary people's engagement with law and formal writing, and on vernacular understandings of equal rights.
