Senior Lecturer, Makerere University, Uganda
Florence Asiimwe is an urban sociologist. Her Ph.D. research explored the obstacles to home ownership for widowed and married women in Kampala, Uganda. The study was premised on the assumption that gender inequality in homeownership persists in Uganda despite urbanization, increased information flow and increased education and income of women. While Uganda’s state policy indicates that every citizen has the right to own property, in particular houses, there is no legal framework that guarantees married women property rights.
Florence’s research interests include gender and housing, comparative studies, human rights and family law. While at U-M, she plans to write a book exploring matrimonial homeownership dynamics.
