Ken Ito was appointed Director in July 2008. Professor of Japanese literature, he received his PhD from Yale University. Professor Ito specializes in modern Japanese literature, particularly Meiji and Taisho fiction. He is the author of Visions of Desire: Tanizaki's Fictional Worlds.His latest book is An Age of Melodrama: Family, Gender, and Social Hierarchy in the Turn-of-the-Century Japanese Novel.

Jonathan Zwicker was appointed Director of Graduate Studies in 2009. Professor Zwicker is an Associate Professor of Japanese Literature. His current role at CJS includes advising Japanese Studies MA students. Professor Zwicker received his PhD from Columbia University.

Administrator, Yuri Fukazawa, manages "people, money, and rules" for the Center. A transplant from Japan, she holds an MA in public relations from Michigan State University.

Program Associate, Jane Ozanich, directs, plans, and oversees all of the center's lecture series, film series, conferences, and special events. She is the editor of the Center's newsletter and the webmaster of this site. Jane has an MA in TESOL from Michigan State University and has lived and worked in Japan.

Student Services Coordinator Azumi Ann Takata, has worked at the University of Michigan since 1994. Her responsibilities include admissions, fellowships, academic advising, career counseling, and anything else related to student life. Ann holds a PhD in sociology and an AM in East Asian studies from Stanford University. Born in Japan and raised in California, Ann is bilingual bicultural and also works as a translator and interpreter.

Heather Littlefield, Community Outreach Coordinator, serves as a liaison to the public in promoting an interest in the study of Japanese culture in K-14 education and within the community. She holds an MA from The University of Michigan in Japanese Studies, has spent one year studying in Japan, one year building a multi-ethnic education program in Kosovo, and has served as an ESL instructor to Japanese children and adults since 2001.

Sandra Morawski, Office Assistant, joined the CJS staff in January 2003. She began her career at the University of Michigan at the Institute for Social Research. Her key responsibility is to support the Center's overall office operations. Other responsibilities include supervision of the student assistants, database management, and accounting related tasks.

Hitomi Tonomura was appointed as the Director of CJS Publications in the summer of 2004. She is a Professor in the Department of History and in the Women's Studies Program.

Bruce Willoughby, Executive Editor of the Publications Program, has worked at the Center for nearly 25 years. He lives out in the country with his wife, Tracy, eight Newfoundlands, four Shih Tzus, two cats, and a number of Eastern Bluebirds.
