TURKEY FULBRIGHT-HAYS SUMMER 2009

CMENAS has received a Fulbright-Hays grant from the US Department of Education (USED)to take up to 14 K-16 educators to Turkey during summer (tentatively June 19-July 22) 2009. The goal is to familiarize participants with the society, politics, history, and culture of Turkey in order to critically teach courses in the social sciences, humanities, and other subjects, with a view to global dynamics and processes through the lens of a European and Middle Eastern context. Throughout the trip, educators will meet with scholars representing a range of disciplines; participate in discussions with political, cultural and community leaders; and meetings/discussions with local educators and students. Participants will turn their experience into new or substantially revised curriculum units to be implemented in the classroom as well as disseminated directly through CMENAS and other national educational programs.

The study tour will be flanked by a pre-departure workshop in the spring, on the people, politics, and culture of Turkey, and a follow-up meeting in the fall of 2009 with the goal of finalizing the curriculum units and evaluating results. Participants will be selected on the basis of their interest in incorporating Turkey and the wider Middle East into their teaching as well as their commitment to bringing a global perspective to their classroom.

The application is a fillable PDF form which can be returned via e-mail or in hard copy format. We will also accept electronic submissions of the narrative statements and curricular samples from applicants as well as letters of recommendation directly from recommenders. All materials should be sent to turkey2009@umich.edu. We have extended the application deadline to March 30.

The tentative itinerary begins in Istanbul, proceeds to Ankara followed by travel throughout southern and western Turkey before ending again in Istanbul. The final itinerary will vary slightly based on final travel dates.

The cost to participants or their institutions is $1000 plus domestic travel to Ann Arbor, MI for the pre- and post-workshops. It is the responsibility of participants to obtain a passport that is valid for at least 6 months beyond the return of the trip (i.e. February 1, 2010).
