Minor Description
ACADEMIC MINOR IN MIDDLE EASTERN AND NORTH AFRICAN STUDIES
Minor Objectives: An interdisciplinary minor in Modern Middle Eastern and North African Studies (MENAS) for students who wish to gain insight into political, economic and social issues affecting the Middle East and North Africa, and who wish to achieve an understanding of the region’s history and culture. Emphasis is on the modern Middle East and North Africa.
Prerequisites: Students are required to take AAPTIS 200 (Introduction to World Religions: Near East) which does not count as credit toward the minor.
Requirements: A minimum of 15 credit hours distributed over three of the following disciplines: 3rd year of a ME language, anthropology, history, history of art, ME literature, MENAS, political science, religion, sociology or women’s studies. Courses must be chosen in consultation with and approved by the undergraduate advisor if not included in a MENAS-approved course list. Courses must focus on the modern Middle East, with no more than two courses on pre-modern topics (language classes being considered modern).
Required courses include:
- A 400-level history class
- A 400-level social science course in either Anthropology, Political Science or Sociology
- One semester (one credit) of the MENAS Interdisciplinary Colloquium (MENAS 493).
Advising: Prospective minors are encouraged to work closely with the area concentration advisor. Academic advising appointments are scheduled with the MENAS academic advisor.
