South Asian Studies Funding Opportunities
Foreign Language Area Studies (FLAS) Scholarships
These competitive fellowships, funded through the Title VI program of the U.S. Department of Education, are awarded to current and incoming University graduate and professional school students, whose work is focused on South Asia, for the study of Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil, or Urdu. Fellowship recipients are expected to enroll in language and area studies courses. An academic year FLAS provides full tuition and a stipend of $14,000. All FLAS awards are contingent upon continued funding through the U.S. Department of Education.
Eligibility:
Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents who are or will be enrolled in full-time degree programs at the University.
Application Procedures:
Application packets are available from the Center or at the link above. In addition to the form, submit:
- Statement of Purpose
- Curriculum Vita
- Two letters of reference on the Academic Report forms
- Language Report form
- Official transcripts from all institutions attended
- GRE, GMAT, or LSAT scores
Students who are planning to take an advanced language course to fulfill the FLAS language requirement must also include:
- A letter of agreement from the instructor teaching the course.
This letter should express the instructor's commitment to cover the language for no less than three (3) credit hours per week. Without this letter, your application will not be considered complete and will not be reviewed.
The South Asia Academic Committee, comprised of South Asia faculty associates, reviews all materials and makes awards.
Note: South Asia Summer FLAS Application
You can apply for the Summer FLAS competition using the same FLAS application. If you are also applying for the Academic Year FLAS, add a note asking us to copy the rest of your materials from your Academic Year application for the Summer competition, so you don't need to submit duplicates. However, you may want to submit a separate Statement of Purpose. Or, clearly describe in your Statement why you plan to study language during the academic year and the summer, and how this fits in with your overall education/career plans. Along with the items mentioned in the Application Procedures above, all applicants for Summer FLAS must include a flyer, pamphlet, or web site printout with the following:
- Name of the institute housing the program
- Name of the program
- Geographical location of the program
- Start and finish dates
- Cost of the program and a breakdown of what is included (tuition, room, board, etc.)
- Number of contact hours
Without this information, your Summer FLAS application will not be considered complete and will not be reviewed.
