The University of Michigan offers REES-related courses in the following divisions of the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts: anthropology, art history, communication, comparative literature, economics, German, history, Judaic studies, linguistics, Near Eastern studies, philosophy, political science, Russian and East European studies, screen arts and cultures, Slavic languages and literatures, and sociology. Area-related courses are also taught in the Residential College and in the following professional fields: architecture, business, law, music, natural resources and environment, public health, and public policy.
The list below (PDF or searchable database) includes courses relating to Russia and Eastern Europe, many of which can be applied to REES undergraduate and graduate degrees. Independent study and directed reading courses may also be used toward a REES degree when appropriate. Please consult the LSA Course Guide and relevant department for details.
REES-approved courses DO NOT require approval by the CREES Academic Advisor; REES-related courses need to be approved.
Please note that only courses labeled 300 and above can count towards the REES concentration. The REES senior seminar requirement may be satisfied by any class meeting the following requirements: 1) it must be small (fewer than 25 students); 2) it must emphasize discussion rather than lecture; and 3) it must have a substantial writing requirement.
