Further Information
In the last couple of decades, Korean society achieved a remarkable development in media and information industry. One of the most popular explanation for this development into the information society is frequently found in the proactive role of the strong state. Contrary to this proposition, I argue that the long term accumulation of social and cultural capital through the personal initiation in private sectors pushed the rapid development in the last few decades. The vector of power allocation has positively arranged through the line of achieved merits rather than ascribed ones in the developmental era. The talk will seek dynamics of restless competition among individuals and families for the accumulation of cultural capital in the contemporary Korean society.
