Program Fee

Courses in the Summer Language Institute will be offered on a not-for-credit basis to applicants requesting the Program Fee option.

This option is available for all of the courses as space permits. However in recent years some of the Spanish and French language courses have filled during pre-registration and therefore have not been available to Program Fee students. U-M students who need Spanish or French are encouraged to register into the class they want in order to secure a spot.

Students choosing the Program Fee option should not register for their course through Wolverine Access. Course credits will not be granted, therefore they will not appear on a transcript or be transferable to other universities. Students participating via the Program Fee option will receive a Certificate of Attendance upon the successful completion of the course.

Undergraduate students considering this option are strongly encouraged to discuss this decision with their academic advisor prior to applying.

Upon acceptance into an SLI course, Program Fee students must pay a $200 non-refundable deposit to hold their space in the course. The deposit will be applied to the cost of the Program Fee, the balance of which is due on the first day of class.

To apply for the Program Fee option, applicants must:

  • Check the Program Fee option on the completed application form.
  • Submit a non-refundable $25 application fee and a personal statement with their application materials.
  • Submit a language report form when applying to a 200 level or higher language course.
  • Applicants to Asian language courses, all non-U-M (guest) students, or anyone applying for a fellowship from the SLI must also submit a copy of their transcript and a letter of recommendation.

Program Fees for 2008 Summer Language Institute courses are:

  • $600 for courses listed as a 1 credit hour course,
  • $1,500 for courses listed as 2 or 3 credit hour courses,
  • $2,000 for courses listed as a 4 credit hour course,
  • $2,800 for courses listed as 6 or 8 credit hour courses, and
  • $3,000 for courses listed as a 10 credit hour course.
