Graduate Study on Latin America and the Caribbean

Program of Study

The University of Michigan offers graduate students a broad introduction to Latin American and Caribbean Studies. More than 250 graduate and professional school students currently enrolled at the University are interested in or working on some aspect of Latin American and Caribbean studies. These students are enrolled in more than 25 departments and schools, from Anthropology to Urban Planning. Each year, an average of 15 U-M graduate students complete doctoral dissertations specifically focused on Latin America.

To better serve these students, LACS now offers a Graduate Certificate in Latin American and Caribbean Studies. The graduate certificate offers official recognition of the student's work on the region. The certificate program requires approximately 5 courses (15 credit hours) on Latin American and Caribbean topics.

Prospective graduate students who are interested in the study of Latin America and the Caribbean at the University of Michigan are encouraged to apply to a department or professional school that is relevant to their specialization and to develop their area focus within the department's doctoral program. Graduate admission to the University is conducted through the academic departments and professional schools.

Courses

The University offers graduate and upper-level courses relevant to Latin American and Caribbean studies in departments ranging from Anthropology to Women's Studies, as well as in the Schools of Music, Natural Resources, and Public Policy. Each semester, LACS compiles a list of these courses, which is posted on-line as the LACS Graduate Course Guide.

LACS Bulletin

LACS coordinates a number of academic events every year, including a regular Brown Bag Series in which scholars (usually graduate students) present their latest work; talks and workshops with Visiting Scholars and Artists; and an occasional Latin American film series. LACS also serves as a clearinghouse for information on other events of interest around campus and Ann Arbor, as well as notices of graduate student conferences and fellowship opportunities. We publish this information in the weekly LACS Bulletin, which we post to students on our email lists during the academic year (September-April). Please sign up here if you would like to add your name to this list.
