RESEARCH
Department of State U.S. Student Fulbright Program
The Institute of International Education (IIE), on behalf of the U.S. State Department, administers the Student Fulbright Program, which makes fellowships available to over 1,500 U.S. students annually to study, conduct research, teach English or train in the creative arts in more than 140 countries worldwide. U.S. Department of Education (US/ED) Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad (DDRA) Fellowships
These student Fulbrights are only for a narrow range of students in certain PhD programs who need to conduct 6-12 months of dissertation research abroad. Learn more.
International Institute Individual Fellowships
The International Institute Individual Fellowships are designed to support University of Michigan students, regardless of citizenship, who are enrolled in a degree program and wish to participate in internships or conduct research abroad. Award amounts are up to $5,000.Learn more
Rackham International Research Award (RIRA)
The Rackham International Research Awards (RIRA) supports terminal master's and doctoral students conducting degree-related research outside the United States and Puerto Rico. Terminal Master's students are those in programs which do not offer a Ph.D. degree, such as an M.F.A.Learn more.
David L. Boren Graduate Fellowships / National Security Education Program (NSEP)
The National Security Education Program (NSEP)David L. Boren Graduate Fellowships provide a unique funding opportunity for U.S. students to study world regions critical to U.S. interests (including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Middle East). The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded. NSEP was designed to provide Americans with the resources and encouragement they need to acquire skills and experiences in areas of the world critical to the future security of our nation, in exchange for a commitment to seek work in the federal government. As students of other cultures and languages, NSEP Boren Scholars begin to acquire the international competence needed to communicate effectively across borders, to understand other perspectives, and to analyze economic and political affairs. The Committee on Institutional Cooperation(CIC) Foreign Language Enhancement Program (FLEP) Fellowship of $2,500 allows graduate students to take advantage of less-commonly-taught-language offerings unavailable at the University of Michigan but available at another participating CIC-member university.Learn more.

INTERNSHIPS
Luce Scholars Program
The Luce Scholars Program provides stipends and internships for 18 young Americans to live and work in Asia each year. Dating from 1974, the program's purpose is to increase awareness of Asia among future leaders in American society. Luce Scholars have backgrounds in virtually every field (other than Asian studies) including medicine, the arts, business, law, science, environmental studies, and journalism. Placements can be made in the following countries in East and Southeast Asia: Brunei, Cambodia, China and Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. CONFERENCES
International Institute Conference Travel Grants
Description: The International Institute provides supplemental travel support for graduate and professional school students who are presenting papers at conferences in the U.S.A. and its territories. Papers must be on international or area studies topics, and must have been selected by a juried process. Students may apply each year for one travel support grant of up to $300.Learn more
International Institute Fund for Conferences and Workshops
The International Institute contributes to the support of conferences and workshops that make substantial contributions to international learning on the University of Michigan campus and in the Ann Arbor community. Grants of up to $2,000 are available to graduate and professional school students and faculty for the purpose of planning and conducting research-related conferences, symposia, and workshops in area and international studies. International Institute Fund for Performances, Films, and Exhibitions
The International Institute provides support for performances, films and related programs, exhibitions, and activities that make substantial contributions to international learning on the University of Michigan campus and in the Ann Arbor community. Events must be held on campus and cost sharing is required. Proposals that involve original curation, research, and instruction will be given priority. Learn more.
