Nature, Nationalism, and Public Intellectualism in India
Further Information:
An examination of the politics of nature conservation in India reveals a paradoxically disproportionate influence of a tiny elite group of conservationists on the political process by which land, forests, and natural resources are allocated between humans and animals in various parts of India. This paper, with illustrations drawn chiefly from conservation politics in Delhi, examines the way in which public debates and public spheres come to be constituted around nature in contemporary India. It takes particular interest in the affective processes by which nationalist ideas and passions inform these debates and shape the emergence of public intellectuals in this arena of contention.
