Undergraduate Academic Minor in East European Studies

CREES offers an interdisciplinary academic minor to students who wish to: a) better understand the history and culture of Eastern Europe and b) gain insight into the political, economic, and social transitions taking place in this region. The minor in East European Studies does not have prerequisites or require knowledge of a language of the region.

Requirements

A minimum of 15 credit hours of REES-approved courses, including at least three upper-level courses. For examples of REES-approved classes, see CREES Courses. Course selection must include:

1) REES 396 (Survey of Central and Eastern Europe and the Enlarged European Union) OR
    REES 397 (The Political Economy of Transformation in East Central Europe)

2) one history course

3) one social science course in either anthropology, economics, political science, or sociology

4) at least one course from the following fields: art history, literature, music, and screen arts and cultures.

All courses must be chosen in consultation with and approved by the CREES Academic Advisor and must cover East European-specific topics. Language courses will not count toward the minor.

This minor is not open to those electing a concentration or another academic minor in Russian and East European Studies (REES). Those electing a concentration in Slavic may pursue a minor in REES, but may not count any Slavic courses toward satisfying the requirements for the REES minor. Students may concurrently pursue a minor in both REES and Slavic, with the following restrictions: 1) REES minors may not count any courses for which Slavic is the home unit; 2) Slavic minors may not count REES 397 nor any courses for which REES is the home unit, including Slavic 395 and 396.
